10 Cloverfield Lane…there are monsters…

10 Cloverfield Lane

Here’s the skinny!

The new movie 10 Cloverfield Lane started out as spec script called The Cellar (or Valencia). Producer J.J. Abrams folded it into 10 Cloverfield Lane, and part of his Cloverfield universe. Make no mistake though the big monster in this film is John Goodman giving a beast of an acting performance that truly deserves an Oscar nod if there is any justice in this world. Deadpool, Holy Chimi-f*ck-ng-Changas!

Deadpool

Deadpool is a super-hero movie game-changer.

Right from the start Deadpool’s director, Tim Miller and writers’ Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese set the irreverent tone of their story with hysterically inventive opening credits. We quickly move into the story of mercenary Wade Wilson who falls in love with Vanessa, Homeland’s Morena Baccarin in the most outrageous montage of holidays via sex scenes ever committed to film.

The basic story is boy meets girl and falls in love. Boy gets cancer. Boy subjects himself to experimental treatment by villain Ajax, which cures cancer and grants boy with enhanced healing powers and looking like an “avocado had sex with an older avocado.” Boy becomes Deadpool and hunts down Ajax who kidnaps girl.

Reynolds and the script writers are the stars of this flick as they treat the whole story like a live action Looney Tunes cartoon meets a shooter video game. The multiple fourth wall breaks match the tone of the Marvel‘s Deadpool comics although you don’t have to be familiar with them to enjoy this wild ride of a movie.

“Explosions attract the coveted 18 to 24 year old demographic.”

The beauty of this film is it’s not PC and watered down. The preview audience I was with could not stop laughing at the crude & clever jokes, sex, ultra-violence and lampooning of the superhero genre. A couple of X-Men aid Deadpool in the end against villains Ajax and Angel Dust but this is Deadpool’s movie as he is the ringmaster.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead!

Brianna Hildebrand’s bratty disinterested portrayal of Negasonic Teenage Warhead is on point although this is a fresh (and better) take on the minor comic book X-Men character. NTW has to finish writing a text message before she can fight the villains. CGI enhanced Colossus is used as a comedic boy scout stereotypical superhero who makes long do-gooder speeches.

Excelsior! ‘Nuff said!

Stan Lee’s cameo is his best to date. I can not spoil it for anyone. Deadpool roasts X-Men movies, Reynolds’ horrible Green Lantern turn, 20th Century Fox and even Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld.

Deadpool, five out of five no-prizes (and chimichangas)!

The brilliance of Deadpool is that it’s not like any other superhero movie. This is a great big rude hulking beast of an action, ultra-violent, comedic masterpiece. I can’t wait to see it a second time tomorrow and hear all the jokes I missed because the audience was laughing so hard. And of course stick around after the credits for an epic fourth wall breaking homage.

no-prize

Hail, Caesar! Oh, My!

Hail, Caesar!

Hail, Yes!

Do yourself a favor and check out Hail, Caesar! Produced, written, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen (the Coen brothers), this all-star comedy is set during Hollywood’s Golden Age of the 1950’s. I admit when I heard about all the stars in this movie I was afraid. So many movies with large star-filled casts end up being complete duds. I was pleasantly surprised that Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Channing Tatum were used to fill their respected roles with purpose. First post on the revamped site!

Hello, everyone – thanks for stopping by!  Special thanks to my fiance Joey for motivating me to restart my site.

So what should I tell you about me?  Well, first of all, I’d probably tell you that I’m a poor boy from Savannah, Georgia.  Then I’d offer you a coca-cola.  I might also tell you that I’m 5’2″ but that’s clearly not true (six feet plus).

This page will be dedicated to anything that strikes my interest. I love to write, read, and host podcasts.

GoG High ResThe Lafsville AdventuresI’m an ex-DJ/radio guy. These days I’m also co-host and co-creator of a podcast called Guardians of the Geekery that you should check out.  And I also wrote a comic book series called The Lafsville Adventures featuring Leather Jacket Guy and The Team.  This and my other comic book work has been reprinted internationally.  And I’m also a member of The Charlotte Geeks and help out with their annual Geek Gala.
